Augusta Preparatory Day School junior David Heaton will compete April 20 in the FIRST Tech Challenge world championship in Houston.

David, a junior with a 4.0 GPA, is a member of Augusta Prep’s first-year Upper School robotics team that advanced to the Georgia State Championship in February. He is one of just three students from Georgia chosen as a FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Dean’s List Finalist; he will attend a luncheon April 20 at the Houston Ballroom in the Marriott Hotel where the final award winners will be selected. Criteria for Dean’s List selection include leadership and commitment to the ideals of FIRST, individual contribution to the team, technical expertise and passion, entrepreneurship and creativity, ability to motivate and lead team members, and ability to effectively increase awareness of FIRST in their school and community.

For several years prior to becoming a member of our robotics team at Augusta Prep, David had been actively 3D printing as a personal business venture and has made earbud cases, iPhone charging docks, pencil holders, pulleys and robotic arms. He has also built a solenoid engine for his chemistry class - an impressive feat of DIY engineering. David has brought his experience and technical knowledge of engineering, CAD and 3D printing into the classroom. Of particular note is his design and building of a driver pulley and a regular pulley for our robot’s grabbing mechanism, and his addition of a rack and pinion apparatus to move the idols in the FTC game.

David serves many roles on our team, acting as co-captain, CAD specialist, mechanical engineer, and new parts specialist. David has taken on the role of co-captain with maturity and patience, and with his guidance and hard work our team has had some impressive wins in our rookie season. David leads the team in design discussions, and shows a keen interest in learning how to improve on his leadership skills.
