Character Education

At Augusta Prep character education goes hand in hand with academic instruction. As author Stephen Covey writes, “To do well, you must do good. And to do good, you must first be good.” We believe students need to see character education as something that is interwoven throughout everything they do. Our goals are to promote the moral, cognitive and emotional growth of students; to develop self-control, good manners and responsibility; to provide an exemplary and consistent model for students; and to stress to our students that positive behavior is admired and respected.

Classroom Education
Monthly virtues are reinforced through classroom lessons that include activities, games, discussions, and examples from literature. Lessons are presented in an age-appropriate, meaningful, and engaging way and are reinforced by teachers throughout each day.

Pillars of Character
The pillars of respect, responsibility, honesty, and kindness are threaded throughout the school day and help promote citizenship and collaboration. Each classroom prominently displays these rules. Students and teachers alike use the four words in conversations to describe the many interactions that occur during the day. When kindergarten teachers see individual students or entire classes performing good deeds or acting in a way that exemplifies one of the four pillars, they are rewarded with a classroom pillar as an affirmation of good behavior. Classrooms work together to earn medals based on the pillars they accumulate.

Community Service
Building a caring school begins in the Lower School and extends into the greater community. Students hold annual clothing, food and toy drives and lead fundraisers to benefit various nonprofit organizations, both locally and abroad. The entire Lower School student body participates in some community service projects, and each classroom adopts at least one project of their own that is meaningful to the students.
