Prep alum Grotz enjoying role as Esports coach

Mere months after graduating from college earlier this year, Augusta Prep alum Kyler Grotz (‘19) found a job doing what he loves - coaching an Esports team.
Grotz graduated earlier this year from Florida Southern with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and his minor in Esports. He is currently pursuing his MBA online in Esports management.

Upon his May graduation, Grotz wanted to continue his career in ESports. Florida National University (located in Hialeah, Fla., just outside of Miami) offered him the opportunity to build its program. In July, he became the school’s Esports head coach of its men’s and women’s programs. His responsibilities include recruiting players, budgeting and running the Esports arena.

This fall, Florida National won its first League of Legends division championship

“I think there’s a lot of future in Esports,” Grotz said. “A lot of colleges are adopting it.”

After graduating from Augusta Prep in 2019, Grotz started watching professional Esports. Halfway through Grotz’s time at Florida Southern, the school announced it was going to an Esports management minor, as well as an MBA program. He then began competing on the Florida Southern “Overwatch” team. He spent a year and a half competing on the team.

“It was a lot of fun,” he said. “I got great insight into the coaching experience, just from talks I had with Florida Southern’s own director as well as the coach we had at the time.”

Grotz said he is enjoying his coaching position at Florida National and plans to keep developing the program. As for the future, he said he plans to continue building the Esports program at the university.

"It’s been a great opportunity so far," he said.
